OTHER NEWS

I have given up playing guitar, and have kept a couple of guitars but sold just about everything else. I am at peace with this fact. I can still sing decently enough when I practice.

My Eurorack has grown into a larger 12U x 168HP Elby Studio Tree solution, as well as a 6U x 70HP Five12 portable case. I am thoroughly enjoying this adventure. I picked up a goregous Roland SH-2 from a good friend (Evan!). It is a 1979 model and works beautifully, with no modifications.

More to the point, the creative possibilities and processes it unlocks are pretty amazing. So many interesting combinations and cross pollination opportunities between each module and workflow. My requirements had changed and I needed my hardware to match my desired workflow. 500 Series is basically a format that provides standards for sizing, power and audio connectivity. You buy a Series 500 chassis and load it with appropriate modules. The modules require the chassis and can not work independently.

When I originally built my studio, I cared only about single signal recording (guitar, vocals, percussion etc) so I built a high quality mic preamp and compression path to reflect the single signal workflow. My newer music, being predominantly electronic, would obviously benefit from a stereo configuration so I set out to design a new outboard rig to accommodate.

Since 2008 I had been using a Cranesong Trakker which was exceptional but only offered a single channel compression. To upgrade to two of the units would have been cost prohibitive and I also wanted to try something different in a non rack format.

I also owned two JLM Audio preamps in a single rack unit being the TG (primarily for guitar tracking) and Dual 99V (everything else). Being non matched devices they were not going to be suitable for stereo tracking. So I sold all that and managed to build the system below.

Sidekick 500 Chassis - provides power and all IN and OUT signal routing for 8 modules

2x JLM Audio Dual 99v Mic Preamps

2x JLM Audio LA500A Compressors

The Series 500 chassis is just next to the left monitor and is standing vertically. Very space effecient.

I am overwhelmingly satisfied with my choices. JLM Audio is an amazing company with superior products and service, and are priced reasonably given the level of quality they provide which is up there with the best in the world. I have used JLM gear since 2008 and it has never come close to letting me down or limiting my possibilities. On the day of receipt I was able to get Joe Malone from JLM on the phone and discuss the design and working details of the devices which was good fun. He makes time for amateurs like me in between servicing exponentially bigger names.

I am seriously considering two of their FREQ500 modules next to provide stereo matched parametric EQ with up to 12db cut or boost per frequency.

The below photos show the Sidekick chassis and the two Dual 99v Mic Preamps and two LA500A compressors.
I have decided upon a name for my electronic music output, something more abstract than just using my OWN name, which I think is better kept for the guitar based music. I will announce that once the relevant registrations have been completed.

New gear acquisitions:

Elektron Digitakt - Sampler and Midi Sequencer

Elektron Digitone - FM Synthesizer

Make Noise 0-Coast - Analog Synthesizer

Behringer Model D - Moog Model D clone

I’ve been extremely busy with sound generation and a bunch of audio experimentation that has not resulted in songs but has taught me a lot.

And I have a couple of new songs on the way too, hence looking at the project name for the electronic and ambient music I produce. I have kind of arrived at a way or working and a sound that I think will be the basis for my ongoing work.

You Are the Abyss

You need to account for all your power and cable routing and this excel spreadsheet is how I did that. You can see I noted which row and position for each pedal, and also the audio route series. Also note the power requirement column showing which pedal requires which voltage and what the source will be.

The brown coloured fields are the ones I planned to modify next - like a TO DO notification. The 0.5 cells represent pairs of pedals run with earthed power splitters enabling one power port to feed two pedals simultaneously, and these need to be in direct series to avoid noise. The PSU field shows one pedal which is being fed externally by a wall point.

I am pretty certain this build is done. Not to say there wont be more pedals added, but that will require a new board to be made. And making a new board is pretty easy and cheap to do. I call this project a great success - the tones available are top quality, and the overall aggregate system is very quiet. Each pedal has a 'use case' as well as good relationship with one or two other pedals in the series. Placement and ordering was very careful as the entire series is front of amp.

My BBE Supa Charger has 8 total power sockets and the good thing about the BBE Supa Charger is you can run at 9v, 12v or 16v. It does not supply 18v which is a little annoying but only the Philosopher King needs that. And that can be done with a 2 to 1 cable providing two times 9v to one pedal. The issue is that consumes two ports, which I didn't want to do.

The sounds I get from this rig are magnificent. I have focused on pedals that are really good at one or two things rather than mini effects unit type units with screens and menus etc. The philosophy of this rig is keeping it manual and simple.

I am using an Apogee JAM96K to connect the electric guitar to BIAS / Jamup.

For the Memory of a Swan - Soundcloud

Steve Turnertag:steveturner.com.au,2005:Post/41283142016-04-09T19:24:36+10:002016-04-09T19:24:36+10:00Studio progress and some inner reflections
Rob Brens attended my home again today and we finally nailed the percussion performances for the ELO cover. Anyone can play a cover of something someone else wrote. Six months of guitar lessons and you can play a huge number of songs, if you want. But to rebuild the song from basic materials as if you wrote it yourself, that is what takes time.

This song is sounding amazing and I love the original so much that doing it any other way would be an unacceptable personal failure. Thanks so much for your time Rob, we are on a winner here.

I thank my parents Glenys and Barry Turner (how Aussie are those names?) for introducing me to to such amazing music when I was 3 or maybe 4 years old living in air force accommodation in Perth. I guess it was the mid 70s?

The Electric Light Orchestra NEW WORLD RECORD album was one of many they owned and I was always intrigued by the artwork on the album sleeve. The music, even at that age, I could feel was very closely linked to the other worldly UFO design and I listened to this collection of songs over and over again.

I remember feeling disappointed when my mother explained to me that the UFO was not real and that the strange men who made the music were just normal human beings and probably lived in a house like we did. Normal human beings indeed! I wish I was as normal as Jeff Lynne.

It took me until my mid teen years to understand their other early albums including ON THE THIRD DAY and NO ANSWER. Those were a little esoteric for a four year old, I think.

Finally after many years of playing, writing and listening to music I feel capable of approaching this song by the amazing Jeff Lynne. It will be included on my EP release for June this year with 3 more of my own songs.
Steve Turnertag:steveturner.com.au,2005:Post/41071762016-03-27T11:00:02+11:002016-03-27T16:54:46+11:00Mission of the Sacred Heart - PREVIEW
Yesterday the mighty Rob Brens appeared on my doorstep and we nailed 95% of the final takes for the percussion parts for ELO Mission of the Sacred Heart.

Here is a quick sample: MISSION OF THE SACRED HEART (Seve Turner) Preview

The songs from the the AMERICAN PSYCHO (Misfits) album are incredibly well written and I wanted to learn a few inside out for that reason. I ended up recording this song just because I enjoyed singing it so much, albeit my own way.

Steve Turner (MISFITS) - Speak of the DevilSteve Turnertag:steveturner.com.au,2005:Post/40647922016-02-29T12:14:38+11:002017-02-05T21:41:56+11:00DIY Project: Acoustic Panels I just finished building and mounting six acoustic absorption panels for my studio.

Check out the process and final results HERE

Steve Turnertag:steveturner.com.au,2005:Post/40632242016-02-27T19:57:44+11:002017-02-05T21:39:44+11:00Percussive MaintenanceRob Brens came over to my place and we worked on some percussion sounds for the ELO cover I am recording for the first EP. Rob was using a mallet and my Steinberger case to replicate a kick sound and it came out great!
Steinberger really produced amazing instruments back before the Gibson takeover. Incidentally, the GIbson developed Steinberger guitar cases sound terrible as percussion objects. What a shame.
The ELO cover a reinterpretation that reorchestrates the already amazing work of Jeff Lynne in a completely different format. The acoustic guitar is literal all the way through, playing the song 'as is', but all other instruments dip in and out of the source material and find their own way through the beautiful melodies and harmonic structures.

And that's why I have Rob Brens on board. Apart from being a deeply technical and diverse player he is also very creative in his own right and gets my concept completely. Once his work is finalised, Evan will put in his bass work and that makes me very, very excited.
Steve Turnertag:steveturner.com.au,2005:Post/40571122016-02-24T15:29:56+11:002017-02-05T21:29:50+11:00DIY Project Page As part of getting my home studio refreshed I am building a few things to create a more functional environment.
